Officer who was hurt in shoot-out returns to work Associated Press OTTAWA An Ottawa police officer has returned to work after being wounded in a shoot -out that left a bank robbery suspect dead. Bruce Hanson, 35, was seriously wounded Feb. 26 in an exchange of gunfire with Roy Bird, 37, of rural Great Bend, after a robbery of Ottawa's First National Bank.

The shooting occurred after Hanson stopped Bird's car several blocks from the bank. One of his most serious injuries came from a bullet that lodged near his heart. Hanson said he had worn a bulletproof vest while he was on street patrol earlier in the day but removed it when he joined a firetraining exercise, during which he encountered Bird. He said he was a firm believer in the protective vest now. "It would have helped," he said.

Although his recovery is going well, Hanson said Tuesday, he was still building up his stamina. Jeff Herrman, director of the Ottawa Department of Public Safety, said the department had plenty of light-duty tasks Hanson could perform until he was ready to return to regular patrol.
