I met Pra Chaiyarach four years ago
at the temple, and I recognized him when
I saw him on campus last fall.

I came out from my classroom and saw
Pra Chaiyarach. We chatted. I asked him
what he was doing here. He said he was
taking English.[...]nd asked me a few questions
about his assignment. I explained it to
him and then he said he understood.

Before we parted I gave him my phone
number and said if there was anything
else I could do to help him, please let me
know. He responded by saying, ‘‘Yes.”’

People ask me if I was at the temple the
day of the funeral service. I say I was
there because it was my duty as a Thai.

But when I think back, I realize that my
heart was the one that took me there.

Nine people were murdered in cold
blood on Aug.[...]monk, one
was a nun, and one was a boy follower.

Freedom: Are we fighting hard enough?

The Colle[...]ts in the Soviet Union show
the power of liberty. What a difference
a taste of freedom can make.

Would[...]Drugs really worth
this price?

Anyone who thinks we are not sacrific-
ing much should consider that r[...]heard of
in America since the days of King George
Ill.

Some of the rulings were:

*Coerced confessions[...]nd request that passengers allow
police to search them or their luggage. A
drug user profile is used to[...]eir assets on
the assumption that all they own is ill got-
ten gains. This is done before guilt has
bee[...]lesson that history has repeatedly shown
us. Will we learn the value of that lesson?

Perhaps we will not learn until it is too
late. But we need only look to the Soviet
Union and China to see the terrible price
that the quest for freedom dem[...]hat away from us.

All men are created equal, and wewhat the liberals who
provide a constant spew of whini[...]roded by our nation’s lawmakers.

Here, though, we are talking about a double standard.

we went to temple only when we felt like
it. But that did not diminish my respect
for my religion.

The police reported there was no sign
of resistance at the scene of the murders,
but we Thais all knew that even before we
read the police report. The monks are
people who[...]oon. All
chores in the temple usually are done by
them. They cannot ask for food; people
have to offer them food in order for them
to have it. They should sleep on the floor
withou[...]obes are
made of three pieces of orange chiffon.

We Buddhists also follow five simple
rules in order to be looked upon as good
Buddhists:

First, we should not kill. Second, we
should not lie. Third, we should not steal.
Fourth, we should not commit adultery.
Lastly, we should not drink alcohol.

I don’t often feel I can speak for
everyone who is Buddhist, but concern-
ing the monks’ murders, I feel I can.

All of us found it incomprehensible.
We could not imagine who would want
to kill the monks. The news was very hard
for all of us to swallow.

I first heard of the slaying on Saturday
afternoon while I was driving home. At
first, I was not sure I heard it right;

nine people killed in our temple!

I waited another half hour until KTAR
news reported on the murders. It was con-
firmed. I sat down and sobbed with
disbelief. I started making calls to peo-
ple I knew, but no one was home.

A week later the news[...]hat
police had allowed the temple to be open-
ed. When I went at about | p.m., I didn’t
know if the bodies had arrived or not.

I saw workers still putting up tents out-
side the temple. I walked past them into
the worship hall. I saw people getting the
temple ready for the arriv[...]e preparing flowers and wreaths
for each coffin.

I saw a picture of the head monk, the
novice monk, and a nun, but I did not see
a picture of Pra Chaiyarach, whom I had
met on campus.

I went further to look at the group pic-
tures; they were so small that I could not
tell who was in the picture. My heart
pounded. I wanted to know if Pra
Chaiyarach was killed or if he was away
on a retreat at the other temple.

I went to offer my assistance to the
people arranging the flowers. I was told
to help cut leaves for the wreaths.

At about 4 p.m. we heard that the
bodies were arriving and that ever[...]hip hall and go out-
side to receive the caravan. I heard peo-
ple start to cry.

“*Please don’t cry too much,”’ I wanted
to tell them, ‘“‘because I will cry, too, and

I do not want to cry.’

I watched the caravan carefully. I was
going to take photographs for The Col-
lege Voice. | wondered how I was going
to compose my pictures so all nine cof-
fins would be in the frame.

My problem was solved because there
was not enough room to take all nine
caskets out[...]ll at first. As a reporter
for The College Voice, I got to go inside.

I was surprised to see that they opened
the caskets, even though it is not part of
Thai custom.

I took a deep breath and decided that
I had to see, and find out whether Pra
Chaiyarach was one of the dead monks.

I started from the bottom of the row,
one by one, and I did not see him. I came
to the eighth casket and froze: It was he.
I stood there for a second staring at his
face. The tears rolled down my cheeks.
I stopped there and walked away.

The funeral service started at 7 p.m. I
stayed until the service ended. Those eight
faces I had seen kept floating inside my
thoughts. I could not sleep for a few
nights. I kept seeing those faces.

I am OK now. I don’t see those faces
as clearly as my first few nights.

But the faces I do want to see are the
faces of the murderers.

I would compare the boredom level of
the affair to that found at a company par-

teaching them that they are all the same.

We can’t stop riding the bus or we
probably already would have

We can, however, flood the Tran
sit System’s customer relations line
with requests for later routes to get
us back home. They, hopefully, have
the sense to listen t[...]il the end of
summer to build shadier bus stops.

I don’t know who pulls the strings
of the transit system, but it is sub-
sidized by us, the people, and I feel
we deserve some management and

ed to return to school and take my
chances[...]ng quotas and padding minority
hiring reports. If there is a 10 percent
minority and woman quota, then yo[...]he
answer lies in each American’s heart.

Until there is a willingness to respect

promise on this issue will be reached.

Where there is inequality, a leveling

I’ve been to seven different water fountains in six
different buildings and at all of them the water
tastes like dirt. I discovered fountains in places I
never knew they were at before.

I’m unemployed and poor and 50 cents is a lot of
money for me to spend on a soda, so I need water.
You’d think for the nearly $400 I paid to go to
GCC, and the construction obstacle course I have to

go through to get in and out of this place, I could
get some free water that didn’t taste like pond scum.

call them horror stories because they‘re
the closest substitute to real terror.

I used to think real terror was hard to
find. but I was wrong.

A friend invited me to an AA meeting

guidelines, then she told us about her life.

Addictions. Abuse. Denial. Guilt.

I can't remember the last time I felt so
exhausted. l couldn't even recall the
things I said during the meeting. I was still
being flooded with memories I thought I

perience. I plan to go again.

apathetic. How could I consider such a
plan? It seemed overwhelming. But
before the debate could begin again, I
began putting one foot in front of the
other, praying for wisdom and guidance.

me now and then. I would brush it away,

tand my own behavior half the time.

I dwelled on it I would become immobile

I became acquainted with Guillermo
last spring while we were working on a
house-painting job. He had a st[...]itive attitude. Although
he spoke broken English, we could com-
municate because of the common bond
we shared as painters.

The immigration process has always in-
trigued me. What motivates people to

It is not every day that someone gets to see the genesis
of a new band.

I have heard from friends for years about how they[...]long before they became famous. Never have one of
them been actually able to say that they saw a band’s
first concert.

Life on Earth, after a two-month period which includ-[...]Ron Kennedy, 21, was from the art-rock Majestic.

Life on Earth was originally formed by Hallenbeck,
Kop[...]’t work out.

Even though the band is basically what was left over
after the disintegration of Wild Kingdom, Life on Earth
decided to go with a ‘“‘less-polis[...]ready quality of the member’s

former bands, Life on Earth is hard to classity.

On their demo tape[...]a sax solo).

Winn says that most are unclear of what the band’s
style is, while Kopenits said that t[...]reason that the music busts stylistic barriers
is because each member of the band has his own ideas.

“We have five very forward personalities,’’ Winn[...]d by record companies and
video producers.

Cannon agrees. ‘‘We want the music to speak, not im-

As I walked into the Civic Plaza, I had no idea
of the scene on the other side of the doors to the Ex-
hibit Hall. I had come to view the Phoenix Chapter

awareness of the deadly HIV/AIDS virus.

I was apprehensive. I thought it would be a
memorial to the dead—angu[...]AIDS.

Some had messages, such as, ‘‘Neither Life nor
Spring Flowers may last Forever, but Both can[...]d hatred created by a lack of knowledge of
AIDS.

I spoke with Robert Lashua, team captain of the
Pho[...]ollege level.
He speaks of ‘‘safer sex, since there is no such thing
as safe sex.”

Part of the change in attitudes is because of the
spread to the heterosexual community, proving the
disease doesn’t know race, sex or social order.

I spoke to ‘‘P.W.A.,”’ a person with AIDS who
wants his ashes scattered in Washington, D.C.

I then spoke to David Ice, a man who was play-
ing a harp. He donates his time and talent to AIDS
benefits because, he said, ‘‘I don’t know how to
organize, fundraise or establish patient services."

People are doing what they can; donating time,
money and resources to t[...]n inactive at GCC for about
a year and a half, so we’re trying to pick up and start
