Wilson Barrett, Arizona lost one of its most beloved bankers and civic leaders with the death of J. Wilson Barrett, 82, on Wednesday, February 13, in Phoenix following a brief illness. Wilson's banking career and civic involvements were elements both personal and pivotal for the time in which he lived and for Arizona. Chief among his traits were optimism, inspiration, hard work, integrity and commitment to endeavor. These meant for him service to the customer, respect for his fellow employee, and faith in a vision for a better community.

These qualities, shared among others' of his generation here, showed forth in dramatic change. Wilson's 45-year banking career paralleled Arizona's dynamic growth and development, which in no small part was made possible by VNB (Valley National Bank, subsequently Bank One) financial assistance to both small and large customers, businesses and institutions. Prior to his becoming Vice Chairman of the Valley National Bank Board of Directors, Wilson was widely known for his instrumental role in developing the bank's statewide branch banking system. Among his most notable professional achievements: President of Arizona State Banking Association; national board member to American Bankers Association; many years as board member Valley National Bank, including over ten years as Vice Chairman of the Board. Wilson's community achievements include: President of the Board, United Way of Phoenix Scottsdale; President of City of Phoenix and the Aviation Department's Municipal Aeronautics Advisory Board; Member, City of Phoenix, Planning Commission; President of the American Cancer Society (Arizona Chapter); Trustee, First United Methodist Foundation; Governing Board John C.

Lincoln Hospital Board and Foundation; Member of the Board, Phoenix Symphony; and Member of Phoenix "100" Rotary Club. Anna Hess Hartung, 100, a pioneer Phoenician, passed away February 10, 2002. Anna was born to Daniel S.

Hess and Hattie Weaver Hess in Newton, Kansas on October 11, 1901, the youngest of a family of five girls and six boys. In 1911 Anna's family moved to the territory of Arizona. The female members of the family traveled by train preceding the male members who rode on what was known as the "immigrant" train which transported personal and household items, livestock and family pets as well as farming equipment to their destination. The family first lived on a rental farm in Glendale, but not for long. Anna's parents purchased a parcel of land on the south side of Bethany Home Road between 12th and 16th Streets near the town of Phoenix.

The brick house her father built on the property in 1917 is still in use today as a business. They started with a dairy farm, then on into cotton and citrus. The Hess family were ardent members of the Mennonite Church but since there were none in the Valley at that time, they affiliated with the Nazarene Church in downtown Phoenix. Anna walked or often rode her burro to the original 3 room Madison School at 16th Street and Missouri. She attended Phoenix Union High School.

In 1921 she married Hubert H. Campbell. The marriage ended in divorce and she was left with two young daughters to support, so she returned to school at the Lamson Business School studying accounting. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Arizona Highway Department, then moved to the Arizona State Income Tax Division where she remained for 13 years. In 1942 she married Frederick Hartung, an elementary school principal and voice teacher.

Anna took a part-time temporary job with the Red Feather (now United Way) as chief accountant. The job became full time permanent and she stayed for 18 years being promoted to office manager in 1949. She retired in December 1964. Although Anna worked outside the home, she made time to participate in various local civic activities and enjoyed singing with local choral groups. She was very active in the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International and the Eastern Star of Arizona.

She also was a member of Creighton Christian Church and the Arizona Historical Society. Anna loved Arizona and was very proud of her family's activities in the early growth of Phoenix and the State. Slade and Jean (Doug) Conley; three grandchildren: Catherine (Barry) Downs of Scottsdale, Patricia Glinski of Wickenburg and Colleen (Jim) Roden of Estacada, Oregon; and five great grandchildren; Patrick Conley of Eugene, Oregon; Erin Roden of Estacada, Oregon; Mia Conley of Scottsdale; and Hannah and Harlan Glinski of Wickenburg; also a sister-in-law, Virginia Hess of Phoenix.
